Does acupuncture hurt? Very fine, sterile, hair like needles are tapped into the skin. When the needle reaches the acupuncture point, you may feel a tingling sensation for an instant. But, generally the insertion of the needle is painless. Here at the Piedmont Avenue Clinic, we also employ Needle-less acupuncture techniques. If you are afraid of needles, learn more about our needle-less techniques here. Does acupuncture work? While most Westerners are more familiar with the use of acupuncture for anesthesia, acupuncture has been shown to be effective for pain control and also in treating a wide variety of conditions. How does it work? Acupuncture was developed thousands of years ago on ancient Chinese concepts. The central concept revolves around Chi, the internal life force found in all living things which circulates throughout your body. When Chi is blocked, the body shows symptoms of pain and malaise. Fine needles are inserted just below the surface of the skin along a pathway of energy, called meridians. These pathways run throughout the body and into the organs. The action of the needle adjusts the flow of energy through the channels, stimulating and balancing the person's own unique energy to restore health. Visit our Acupuncture page for more information. So why does the energy in the meridians decrease or become blocked in the first place? Stress, sudden emotional shocks, exposure to toxins, fear, sadness, worry, grief or anxiety over a long period of time can affect the flow of energy. Can you guarantee that I will "get better"? No respected medical discipline will offer a "guarantee." We promise to work as hard as we can to help relieve your problems. Are the needles sterile? Yes. All needles are stainless steel and are disposed of after your treatment. Do you bill insurance? If you have one of the insurances in the AcuCare plan, we will do so. If you have MedPay for an auto accident, we will also bill that. Absent the above, we will give you a well documented superbill for your reimbursement. Medicare/MediCal does not cover acupuncture. Visit our Payment Info page for more information on billing. |
